YOUTH FOR AFRICAN STAR (YAS) NGO EMBARKS ON A CLEANUP CAMPAIGN
Cleanliness is next to godliness. Many environmental campaign programs such as National Sanitation Day have been implemented by the Government of Ghana to attain sustainable and healthy environment.
Accra has been experiencing periodic flooding due to choked drainage systems which results in cholera, diarrhoea and even deaths. Market places have been one of the leading production centres of solid waste in Accra, Ghana. Due to improper waste management system in the city, most municipal solid wastes generated get into the drainage which is further carried into the sea and rivers to disturb the aquatic habitat. Those that are collected and disposed at refused damps are not properly recycled and this results in generation of methane (greenhouse gas) which gets exposed into the atmosphere resulting in global warming.
On Febraury 1, 2017, the executives and some members of YAS immersed themselves in a cleanup exercise at Achimota Market. This opportunity was also ceased to educate the vendors on environmental filth and its impact on food and health; their roles to play to make African Union and United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals attainable, especially agenda 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), agenda 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), agenda 13 (Climate Change), agenda 14 (Life Below Water) and agenda 15 (Life on Land). This program would be done regularly to ensure clean and sustainable environment.
